Configure Mozilla Thunderbird to Work with Slashmail.org

The following tutorial describes how to configure Mozilla Thunderbird to work with Slashmail.

To start, go into "Tools" and select "Account Settings".

The Account Settings console will open up.  Select "Add Account".

Make sure that "Email account" is selected and click "Next".

Next, fill in your name as you would like it to appear.  Then fill in your Slashmail email address.
When finished, click "Next".

Now, on to server configuration settings.

Make sure that you select "IMAP" and insert slashmail.org i the Incoming Server text box.
When finished, click "Next".

Next, verify that your "Incoming User Name" by entering your email address.
Click "Next" when finished.

Next, verify that your email address is correct.  If all is good, click "Next".

You have successfully set up your account.  Click "Finish" to display the Account Settings.

Now, you must specify some server settings before you can use the account.  Click on "Server Settings" located on the left side of the console.  Click "Use secure connection (SSL)".  The port should then change to 993.  Next, click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)".

On this page, you'll want to configure Slashmail as your SMTP server.  To do this, click on the "Edit" button.

Most of the settings should be set on this page.  Make sure that the description is set to Slashmail and the Server Name is set to slashmail.org.  Also, check to see if the port is set to 25 and that your username appears as your email address.  Finally, make sure that the "TLS" button is selected.

Congratulations!  Your account is now ready for use.
Upon first using your account, Thunderbird may ask for your password.  You can enter it at this time and click the "Use Password Manager to remember this password." box so you won't have to enter it every time.

Additional Information about Email Clients

Please note that port 25 is blocked by some Internet Service Providers (ISP).  If you set up the account and have trouble, you may need to contact your ISP to confirm if this port is blocked.  ISP's block port 25 so that their customers cannot spam others from their computer.  If the port is indeed blocked, you can use an alternate SMTP ort with Thunderbird.  Simply change the port number from 25 to 225.

Another important consideration:  You will need to disable any email scanning virus software that is on your computer.  software such as McAffee, Norton, Symantec, AVG, and many others do not have the capabilities to work with Slashmail's 128-Bit Secure Socket Layer Connection (SSL).  If you do not disable the email virus scanning software, Express will give you an error when trying to send email, and the email will not reach it's destination.
